Dog and Handler - each bringing out the best in the other
Dogs will not walk into a show ring, patiently wait in turn and then politely show themselves off for the Judge, nor will they take themselves around an Agility Course in the correct sequence or do heel work to music of their own accord. Anyone who has taken the time to get involved in any of the wide range of activities designed for dogs and their humans will know how much fun they can be and how rewarding it is when you both do well.
It is obviously possible to train a dog to do all of the things expected of it and some dogs, just like people, will have more aptitude for certain activities than others. The most we can ever ask from our dogs is that they give 100% and it is up to us, as trainers and handlers, to help them to do the best they are capable of.
So, when thinking about Dog Training, it is actually best to start with Handler Training and to commit some time to learning about the best ways to train a dog rather than simply dive in and expect a dog to "just get it".
We believe that the secret to success (if there is one) is not simply to get dogs to do what you want them to do, you actually need to get them to WANT to do what you want them to do.
There are Dog Shows, Agility Competitions, Working Dog & Sheep Dog Trials, Canine Cross Country Races, Fly Ball Contests and Obedience Competitions - all aimed at judging the performance of the dog. However, there are also Handling Competitions where the handler is being judged on their ability to get the best possible performance out of the dog.
